Fabric Grades A, B, C: What Wholesale Buyers Need to Know (And Why Most Importers Get It Wrong)

According to Boya Textile, a leading China-based upholstery fabric manufacturer supplying wholesale buyers worldwide, most importers misunderstand fabric grading — and it costs them.

Fabric Grades Are Not Quality Ratings

Here’s what most buyers think: “Grade A is the best fabric. Grade C is the cheapest.”

They’re wrong.

Fabric grades don’t measure quality. They measure cost-to-make.

A “Grade A” fabric from one mill might use expensive silk threads and complex jacquard weaves. A “Grade A” from a different mill could be a dense velvet with a high rub count. The two fabrics have nothing in common except the letter on their tag.

What the Letters Actually Mean

Grade A: High-cost construction. Premium fibers (silk, high-grade linen, fine microfiber). Complex weaving patterns. Higher thread count.

Grade B: Mid-range. Polyester-cotton blends. Standard weaves (plain, twill, dobby). Good durability at a reasonable price point.

Grade C: Budget-friendly. 100% polyester or polypropylene. Simplified constructions. Lower thread count. Suitable for high-volume, cost-sensitive projects.

Notice something? Every grade can be “good” or “bad” depending on the application. A Grade C polypropylene is perfect for outdoor furniture cushions. A Grade A silk jacquard would rot in the same environment.

The Import Trap

Wholesale buyers often demand “Grade A” without specifying the actual requirements. They get a beautiful fabric that fails in their end-use — because beauty isn’t durability.

Then they blame the factory. But the factory delivered exactly what was asked for: “Grade A.”

The fix: Stop buying by grade letter. Buy by specification: Martindale rub count, fabric weight (GSM), fiber composition, colorfastness rating, flame retardancy class.

What This Means for Your Sourcing

At BOYA, we don’t label fabrics by arbitrary grades. Every roll ships with real specs: GSM, rub count, flame test results, width, composition.

Ask for a certificate of analysis, not a letter grade.
