Hypothetical scene, but close enough to a pattern that repeats across the industry. The product manager is not careless. The missing details are simply invisible until the factory has to act on them. And every round of re-sampling costs time the launch calendar does not have.

Why the old way fails

Short briefs feel efficient. They are not.

Layer 4: Workmanship and finish

Fabric choice identifies the material. Workmanship defines the product.

Before sampling, specify the finish points:

  • Hem style: folded, stitched, fringed, bound or raw-edge treatment.
  • Corner construction and the number of stitching passes.
  • Edge stitching: single row, double row, decorative thread or none.

The fastest way to delay an OEM sofa-cover project is to ask the factory to β€œstart quickly” before both sides have agreed what an acceptable product looks like.

A reference photo may communicate style, but it does not settle fit range, stretch direction, seam placement, color tolerance, packed size or the claim language that will appear on a marketplace listing. Material release

Confirm lot identity, color reference, finished width, finished GSM and composition scope where these are part of the specification. Coated, laminated or patterned materials may need additional checks for usable width, edge condition, repeat and layer consistency.

Pattern, marker and cutting

The cutting plan must reflect the approved size, stretch direction, pattern direction and usable fabric width. A change in width or repeat can alter consumption even if the quoted price per metre stays the same.
