How to Deep Clean a Fabric Sofa Without Ruining It: Professional Guide for Commercial and Residential
Deep cleaning a fabric sofa is necessary every 12-24 months. Doing it wrong voids warranties and damages the fabric. Here’s the professional protocol.
Check the cleaning code first. Every upholstery fabric has a cleaning code: W (water-based cleaner), S (solvent/dry clean only), WS (either), or X (vacuum only — professional cleaning required). The code is on the care label. Ignoring it causes most cleaning damage.
Step 1: Vacuum thoroughly. Remove all loose soil before applying any liquid. Wet soil = mud.
Step 2: Test cleaner on a hidden area. Wait 10 minutes. Check for color transfer or shrinkage.
Step 3: Work from top to bottom. Clean the entire panel, not just the stain. Spot-cleaning leaves rings.
Step 4: Extract thoroughly. Over-wetting is the #1 cause of mold and mildew in upholstery. Use a wet/dry vacuum or extraction machine.
Step 5: Accelerate drying with fans. A fan cuts drying time from 24 hours to 4-6 hours. Do not sit on the sofa until completely dry.
