Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning Upholstery: Which Is Better for Your Fabric Type

Steam cleaning (hot water extraction) and dry cleaning (solvent cleaning) are the two professional upholstery cleaning methods. The right choice depends on your fabric type.

Steam cleaning: 200°F water mixed with cleaning solution, injected into the fabric, then extracted with vacuum pressure. Best for: cotton, linen, polyester blends, and performance fabrics. Kills dust mites and bacteria — ideal for healthcare and hospitality.

Dry cleaning: Solvent-based cleaner applied to the fabric, then extracted with a dry vacuum. No water, no drying time. Best for: velvet, silk, wool, and fabrics with the ‘S’ cleaning code. Lower risk of shrinkage and color bleeding.

When steam cleaning is better: Heavy soil, high-traffic commercial, pet stains, odor removal, and allergen control. Steam penetrates deeper and extracts more soil.

When dry cleaning is better: Delicate fabrics, velvet pile preservation, quick-drying needed (same-day turnaround), and water-sensitive dyes.

For commercial specifiers: Specify a cleaning method when selecting fabric. Most contract-grade fabrics (polyester, solution-dyed acrylic) handle steam cleaning well. Avoid steam on velvet unless explicitly labeled.

BOYA fabrics include cleaning code labels. When in doubt, test on a hidden area first.
