One sample feels dense and heavy, like a winter blanket. The other drapes softly and folds into a much smaller bag. The spec sheet shows why: 680 GSM versus 420 GSM.
The 420 GSM option costs less per unit. It also costs less to ship. The 680 GSM option feels more premium and sits heavier on the sofa. Which one becomes the listing?
If the seller chooses by GSM alone, this is the wrong question. If the seller ignores GSM entirely, the listing carries a different risk. GSM is one input in a sofa-cover specification. It must be evaluated together with construction, fit, care, packing and the target customer use case.
That sentence is the rule. This post shows why.
Why the GSM-only shortcut fails
The old shortcut was simple: heavier fabric means better quality. So buyers wrote “600 GSM minimum” into the spec and moved on.
The shortcut fails in two directions.
Direction one: buyers pick the heaviest sample to feel safe. The cover ships, and a familiar, generic review pattern follows: “slips off the sofa,” “too bulky to fold,” “doesn’t stay on the corner.” GSM did not fix fit. GSM cannot fix a construction that has no grip.
Direction two: buyers pick the lightest sample to protect margin. Freight is lower. Unit cost is better. The cover looks fine in a folded video. Then a customer sits on it for eight weeks. The fabric thins, pills, or shows the sofa through it. Negative reviews follow. Returns and advertising losses erase the freight savings.
Either way, one number was used to answer five different questions.
GSM answers one question: how much does a square meter of this fabric weigh? It does not answer whether the cover stays, stretches, washes, drapes, or survives a pet household.
Level 1: GSM is a density signal, not a rating
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is a scale-based measurement of fabric mass.
A higher GSM usually means more fiber in the same area. That often gives more opacity, more structure, and a heavier hand feel. For a buyer, that is useful signal.
But GSM says nothing about fiber type. A 500 GSM fabric of fine polyester can behave differently from a 500 GSM fabric with a thick, low-twist yarn. It says nothing about weave or knit structure. It says nothing about finishing, backing, anti-slip coating, or seam construction.
Treat GSM as a density signal. Treat fabric construction as the operating system that decides how that density performs.
Level 2: The same GSM behaves differently across constructions
Take 400 GSM as a hypothetical mid-range value. Apply it to four constructions.
Chenille: the weight sits in dense loops. The surface is soft and matte, and it hides pet hair well. The same loop structure can also snag, so buyers need to check how the loops behave under friction.
Waffle: the construction uses air pockets. It feels light relative to its visual bulk, packs smaller, and reads as “blanket texture” rather than “upholstery.”
Corduroy: the weight sits in vertical ribs. It gives a structured, directional hand feel and a warm look.
Plush or faux-rabbit-fur: the surface fiber carries the feel. GSM reflects pile density, but the backing and pile height decide how it survives washing.
Same number, four different products. The correct reply to “give me 400 GSM” is always: “400 GSM in which construction?”

Fabric weight is measured at the factory, on new goods. The customer experiences fabric after the first wash.
Washing can relax, shrink, soften, or distort a fabric. Heat in a dryer can change the pile. A low-quality backing can peel even if the face fabric is heavy.
That is why the care label belongs in the spec discussion, not after it. A sofa cover for a pet household may be washed weekly. A decorative throw may never be washed. The same GSM will perform differently in those two lives.
Buyers should ask: how does this construction behave after five washes? If the supplier offers a wash-test sample, use it. If not, confirm the care instructions and expected behavior before bulk production.
Level 5: Packing and freight turn GSM into a margin decision
Weight drives shipping cost. Volume drives packing cost. GSM affects both.
