Microfiber Upholstery Fabric Grades: GSM, Abrasion, and What to Specify for Commercial Use

According to Boya Textile, microfiber upholstery is the most practical fabric choice for high-traffic homes and commercial spaces — but most importers don’t know how to distinguish quality grades.

Microfiber is an ultrafine polyester or nylon fiber, split into micro-denier filaments (1 denier or less, compared to standard polyester at 4-6 denier). The ultra-fine fibers create a dense weave that blocks liquids, resists abrasion, and feels softer than standard polyester.

The grade difference: entry-level microfiber (under 200 GSM) works for decorative pillows and light-use ottomans. Mid-grade (200-350 GSM) handles residential sofas and moderate commercial seating. Premium (350+ GSM) is contract-grade, exceeding 100,000 Wyzenbeek rubs and passing heavy commercial abrasion standards.

The most common import mistake: specifying ‘microfiber’ without GSM or rub count. A 180 GSM microfiber and a 400 GSM microfiber are both legally ‘microfiber’ — but one lasts 2 years and the other lasts 15.

Microfiber’s biggest advantage over chenille and velvet is stain resistance. The tight weave prevents liquid penetration. In controlled tests, microfiber resists staining 3x longer than standard chenille. For restaurants, medical waiting rooms, and family homes, it’s the most practical choice.
