The Do’s and Don’ts of Washing Removable Sofa Covers: A Manufacturer’s Guide
Removable sofa covers are convenient — but only if washed correctly. Improper washing is the #1 cause of post-purchase returns for sofa cover manufacturers.
DO: Remove all cushions and fasten zippers/velcro before washing. Loose zippers catch on the machine drum. DON’T: Use fabric softener. It breaks down the water-repellent coating and leaves a residue that attracts dirt.
DO: Wash in cold water (max 30°C / 86°F). Hot water shrinks cotton and polyester blends. DON’T: Overload the machine. Covers need room to move. 60% drum capacity max.
DO: Air dry or tumble dry on low. High heat damages elastic and causes shrinkage. DON’T: Wring or twist — it distorts the fabric weave permanently.
For manufacturers: include a wash care label sewn into every cover. BOYA provides custom care labels in bulk with washing instructions tailored to your fabric type.
